Amelie & Albie’s Adventures are on a mission to try and educate young children and their families about Epilepsy and to help spread awareness.
Our Story….
Amelie had her first seizure at just 12 weeks old, and this is when our world got turned upside down. For me this was the first time of witnessing a seizure, and at this point I didn’t even know that this is, what was actually happening. Amelie’s oxygen levels would drop, and her skin would turn blue, these would last approx. a minute or so, and these minutes would feel like hours. Reflecting, I don’t think it is ever something that you are able to ‘get used to’… so to speak, you just seem to build resilience with each and everyone.
Amelie went through a mass of tests and MRI scans, and was then diagnosed with Focal Epilepsy. We started on Epilepsy Medicine to try and get the seizures under control. Over the coming months we worked our way through different medicines which unfortunately weren’t effective on controlling the seizures for Amelie.
When Amelie turned 7 months old, she was diagnosed with a new type of seizure called West Syndrome. Amelie would have spasms which would affect her eyes and upper part of the body, where her arms would jolt upwards in a jerking motion, for a split second. But this would happen repeatedly in a cluster.
After so many failed medicines, it was decided that Amelie was a candidate for Epilepsy Surgery. She had an extended left temporal lobe resection. Of which was successful for 6 months, where she was seizure free! Then on the 6-month day, it reared its ugly head again.
Since then, Amelie still has seizures daily.
Because of the journey that Amelie has taken me, I wanted to try and spread awareness and make difference in some way. She was my inspiration to write Children’s books on Inclusion……
Amelie & Albie’s Adventures, is a rhyming tale about Amelie and her best friend Albie the dragon. I have written this book to help educate children about Autism/nonverbal Autism and Epilepsy to help children understand there are many great reasons for being friends with those who are different than they are.
One of the reviews we have received:
“Your book was found to be a charming and entertaining read very well suited for a young audience. It has a friendly and very relatable storyline and a compelling cast of characters the young readers will resonate with. It is well suited to its intended age group with accessible, dynamic, and engaging language and believe, it will be well received and a worthy addition to any children’s collection.”
